Although the surf was a bit lighter today, it poured rain this morning, and the sun failed to emerge at all. Despite the cloudy conditions, my youngest son and I decided to spend the day outdoors—mostly on the beach.

We walked miles along the beach and were treated to being able to explore the smaller tide pools off of Laguna’s Main Beach. There we saw all sorts of great sea life that I took photos of. I’ll get those images uploaded near the end of the week.

To make it to those tide pools, we had to brave our way through a beach heavily littered with rotting (does it rot) seaweed. Even if it doesn’t rot, whatever was wrong with the mounds of it we came across made it stink worse than rotten eggs. It actually made our eyes water.

Yuck!

Oddly, there were no people on the beach other than two families with smaller children. And they decided to lie out their towels right in the middle of that seaweed smelly mess.

Ew!

I snapped a photo of them, and they looked non-too-pleased with their plight. (Why they didn’t opt to walk a little distance away to where the beach wasn’t strewn with horrid-smelling seaweed is beyond me.

Oh well, to each their own.

As for the main tide pool areas, they were still closed due to heavy surf and nasty riptides. We spoke with a lifeguard that told us they would most likely remain closed until Thursday.

Darn, that’s one of the best parts of Laguna!

My son and I decided to not let that dampen our good moods and walked up into the main village of Laguna where we walked the streets and visited a few stores. After that, we headed back to the beach house and went to play a marathon game of paddleball, lasting almost two hours. By the time we were done, both of us dreaded having to walk up countless steep stairs to get back to the house. We made it up the first flight, rinsed our feet and decided that the hanging swing had been neglected by us and needed us to rest on it.

Once we’d appeased the swing, we headed up to the house and then walked about a quarter mile to get some hot cocoa mix as we were both freezing.

Back at the house, we sipped steaming hot cocoa, warmed ourselves by a roaring fire and indulged in CPK chicken and garlic pizza, accompanied by Caesar salad.

Yum!

So, a day that for many may have seemed like a waste for being at the beach, we managed to turn into a great experience.

Since dinner, we’ve been watching TV, reading books and hanging out together—great mother/son time.
